Desperate students

Teaching is a very honest profession. As a teacher, you will wear many hats -true or not.

Good teacher needs to have these values:

  • verbally or using facial expression, must be good at explaining things.
  • very patient and keep their cool.
  • must have a sense of humor to make learning 'happening'.
  • friendly, especially students in the age range in which they intend to teach.
  • set high expectations for their students and hold the students to those expectations.
  • can lead or follow, as the situation demands.
  • understanding and don't take things for granted.

BUT if students like ABOVE is making such things... should a teacher be good anyway??

A great teacher understands that kids who answer questions sarcastically are looking for attention--either positive or negative. As a teacher, I would mark the answers incorrect and move on (especially to the vagina answer!) OR you could give two grades-- A fictional A+ for creativity and an actual grade of F for not knowing the answer. Most of these seem to be done in good fun and the kids at least bring a giggle to you while working. Keep your patience as it is always important to remain a good role model. Discuss the serious ones (vagina) with the student and insist it stops. I was a teacher prior to becoming a mom--I taught in a very heavy gang-ruled school and believe it or not, it is possible to make a difference with even the seemingly untouchable students if you just keep trying. Don't be discouraged and remember why you started teaching in the first place. =) A sense of humor is greatly needed here.
